E-D Wired 3D Glasses Review

eDimensional Wired E-D Glasses Review

By: Patrick aka. Acid-Phreak 6/21/2002

Introduction:

Today on the AMDPower test bench is a product sent to us by eDimensional, a pair of their Wired E-D Glasses. eDimensional as a company has only been around since mid 2000 so they are still new to the scene and their attempts to bring true 3D gaming has led them to producing the E-D Glasses.  Now their website claims these glasses help deliver the "Best 3-D Gaming Graphics Ever, Guaranteed".  This is a tall order to live up to so we will be putting them through the ringer to see if its as good as it's cracked up to be.

You might want to also check out the previous article Jack wrote that dealt with Wicked3D EyeScream. Both the Wicked3D EyeScream and the eDimensional E-D Glasses are attempting to do the same things in terms on 3D game enhancements. One uses the more traditional red and blue 3D glasses and the other uses enhanced LCD shutters.

Product:

The E-D Glasses come in two different flavors.  A wired version and a wireless version.  Our review focuses on the wired version of the glasses but the only real difference between the two is that the wireless version has an infrared port that transmits the signal from your PC to the glasses.

Our review sample showed up in a Fed Ex box nicely package to prevent any damage to the goods inside. Inside I found a boxed version of the Wired E-D Glasses displayed below.

Opening the box found the contents below.

So what is this stuff??

  • 2 CD's, one containing drivers and another with some demo games
  • 1 Pair of Wired E-D Glasses
  • 1 Dongle Cable
  • 1 Pair of "short" temple extensions (for us with little heads)
  • 1 Instruction booklet

Also pictured in the above is an optional power adapter to be used with some older video cards. I'm willing to bet nobody will need this adapter.

First Impression:

My first impression of these glasses was quite good.  I had expected the glasses not to fit and to be made of some flimsy plastic material. On the contrary, the glasses were constructed to be used and abused and the ease of swapping out the temple pieces made it easy to adapt the glasses to my little fat head.  The only downside I found were the instructions were somewhat inadequate. I would have expected to see a completed diagram showing how they should be hooked up to the PC and monitor. I know, how hard could it really be?  Not very, but if you have someone who is not tech savvy and they have extra "optional parts" laying around, its quite possible they would have this hooked up ass backwards.
