Introduction

The Alpha P7125 came unassembled via priority mail from Coolerguys. It consists of two 60mm, 4200 RPM, 26CFM fans. The heatsink is an Alpha and comes with mounting instructions, grills, Y-Cable, and all needed screws.

Installation

Installation was fairly easy and self-explanatory. The heatsink mounts to the Athlon heatplate with four self-tapping screws. This must be done before the intake cover is installed. I had a bit of trouble with the self-tapping screws. It was very difficult to thread the heatplate but with a proper screwdriver with a large handle, it can be done. After the heatsink is mounted, simply mount the fans on the intake cover and mount the intake cover to the heatsink.

Both fans are equipped with three wires. This is a cool because it allows you monitor both fans on different fan connectors or use a Y-Cable for a single connector. You will notice that the Y-Cable only has one sensor wire. This is because certain motherboards will fail to read from a doubled fan lead.

The core of the Alpha heatsink is copper. Copper provides for better heat transfer and is a definite plus for the combo. The heatsink will also fit about any K7 motherboard available. It has a notch in the fins which allow it to get past the power connector on the mainboard. You can see clearly in the following picture.

This notch allowed for a perfect fit in my Gigabyte 7IX with no modification. It will also work in the Asus K7M.

Problems

The only problem I ran into was with the stability of the unit. The heatsink itself is very heavy and it did not come with a heatsink clip for the motherboard. This would not be a problem if I had the back of my Athlon on. However, like a lot of people, my Athlon has the plastic casing removed for GFD's. The CPU cartridge can become quite wobbly. I was able to solve the problem by nothing and snapping the case back on. See... Good thing you held on to that Athlon backing!:)

Performance

The temperature readings were taken off of the motherboard sensor and were not very accurate. Therefore, I will just let you know that the cooling was about 12-15 degrees cooler than stock cooling in comparison. Quite a difference!

Coolerguys offers the Alpha P7125 with either very high performance fans, or high performance/quite fans. I evaluated the very high performance fans and I did not think they were very loud at all. I would definitely opt for the better fans.

Fianl Comments

Overall, I give the Alpha P7125 a 9/10. What can I say.... It's an Alpha!

Special thanx to Coolerguys for supplying me the Alpha!
