FrontX Multimedia Ports

Introduction

Some of you may have already heard of the FrontX system now offered by HighSpeedPC. It is basically a way to port the line-in, mic, headphone, and gameport to a free 5 1/2 bay on the front of the case. There is also room for add-ons which will include USB and serial. I have actually considered doing this myself several times. It is nice to see a company produce these things.

The construction of the unit is very sturdy. The bay mount is solid and the wires used are nice and thick. They are not gold but they should work for you just fine. The flip down cover is nice but is a little flimsy and looks as if it may wear out after time. Though, mine is working just fine for now. A metal support bracket helps to hold the shape of the bay mount. Packaging was very efficient and professional.

Installation

This is pretty straight forward. You just mount the bay unit in the front and then run the wires out of a free slot in the back, where the speaker mount is. The speaker mount holds the wires as well as allowing a pass-through for the speakers/headphone. Plug the jacks in and you are ready to go.

Conclusion

I like this thing. I can now reach further with my gamepad and I have easy access when using either my headphones or headset with microphone. The only problem I had was that I have four speaker output on my Vortex 2 card. The speaker pass-trough only cuts out one of the channels. However, it is very easy just to turn off the other set of speakers so it didn't bother me much. Overall I would say the FrontX Multimedia Kit gets a 9/10. It is the first device like it I have seen which will work with any soundcard. Thanx to HighSpeedPC for the review unit!
