Xincom DPG-602 Dual WAN Router With Inbound Load Balancing (Page 2)

Manufacturer: Xincom
By: Jack Kolesar 09-10-04

Under The Hood

You can see in the pictures below that there have been quite a few design changes from the previous generation of Xincom's router.  Along with the faster processor, the board has taken a major shrink in size.  Also to note is that the dip-switches are no longer present on the back of the unit.  Previously, it was necessary to alter the switch positions to perform  a firmware update.  This extra security measure is no longer in place.

Outbound Balancing and Testing Methodology

In my previous review of Xincom's DPG-402 and Edimax's dual-WAN router, I tested outbound load balancing using two 4 Mb/s broadband internet connections.  Because the outbound functions of the DPG-602 are the same as the 402, (and because it was more of a pain ordering and then canceling a second internet connection than I care to elaborate) I did not test this functionality again.  Instead, I recommend that you read my initial review which details this feature.

Setup/Features

Setting up the DPG-602 router was just as easy as the 402 for normal functionality.  In fact, the only difference in the design of the user interface appears to be a drop-down master menuWhile the web-based configuration pages are not the prettiest, they are functional.  However, the help pages need some work.  Many of the feature descriptions appear to have been translated from a different language and are a bit difficult to read.  I believe Xincom is in the process of working on this though.

Again, I won't detail redundant features to the 402.  Please read the DPG-402 review for the majority of features.  The following screens are new to the DPG-602.

uPNP

The DPG-602 supports Universal Plug and Play (uPnP) technology.  This permits different networking devices and operating system to inter-operate smoothly.  With UPnP enabled, the router can automatically discover the network and specific programs within Windows XP can enable port mapping on their own.  For more details about uPnP, please visit uPnP.org

Sessions

Sessions can now be limited by the router.  This can help to reserve precious system resources.
